Installing
these free software programs on your own computer will allow you to access
files on the FDU Web server and to work on building your Website pages from
off-campus or home. |
|||||||
1. FTP Client Software: Use to access files on the Web server WS_FTP
LE by Ipswitch is the program on your FDU computer that
allows you to move your Website files to the Web server, so your site
can be viewed on the Internet. Application name: Core
FTP Lite – available free for students and teachers. I don't have a tutorial on this site for Core FTP. However, links to WS_FTP LE tutorials are offered below as this is the application on your FDU computer. Note that the logon procedure & setup information is the same for both tools. Go to Professor Debren's
online tutorial on using
WS_FTP LE. Or, for developer's tutorials go to http://tutorial.ftpplanet.com/LE/
(Online guides to using the Ipswitch FTP client.) Additional information,
including an introductory guide to FTP, can be found at http://www.ftpplanet.com/tutorial/. |

| FireFTP is another suggested tool to upload your files to the SOE webserver. FireFTP is an extension (or plug-in) to the Mozilla Firefox browser. You must first have the browser installed on your computer. If you don't, go to www.mozilla.com to download FireFox-2. Once installed, open Firefox, click on Tools > add-ons, then click on the "Get Extensions" link. In the Search box (near top of page) enter "fireftp" then click "Search." Click on the "FireFTP" link, then on the "Install Now" button. You will need to close, then restart Firefox to complete the installation. With Firefox running, click on Tools > FireFTP to launch FireFTP. Setup is the same as all FTP client tools. Create a new account for your site, then enter your site login name and password. Note that both Windows PC and Mac users can install Firefox and FireFTP. | |||||||
| Hint: Check out some of the many other free plug-ins and extensions to the Firefox browser, such as Aardvark. This tool will allow you to edit a web page you are viewing in the Firefox browser before you print the page. For example, you can remove ads from a web page you may want to print for your class. To install, follow the instructions for downloading FireFTP above, but type "aardvark" into the search box. | |||||||
MAC
users: FireFTP should work well for you. Advanced users might consider other products
such as Transmit
by Panic. (It's not free but the trial version will still work without payment following the trial period, with limited features.) You
might also consider another program called Fetch
for $25 (free trial). Advanced Mac users might also want to look at Fugu, which offers secure Internet transmissions. Note that if you own or plan to buy a Web authoring program,
most have an FTP client already built in. |
|||||||
Overview
of the FTP Process: This brief presentation
might help to make the process of uploading and downloading
your files to the FDU Web server a bit less confusing. Click
here to download or view a brief animated PowerPoint presentation. (Note:
You must use Internet Explorer ver. 5 or higher to view in your Web browser;
alternately, you can download the file as a PowerPoint presentation.)
After viewing the presentation, close the browser window to return
to this page. |

2.
IrfanView Graphics Editor (see note below*) Windows-PC only |
|||||||
Alternate site for downloading IrfanView and optional plug-ins: |
|||||||
IrfanView is a very fast, small, compact and innovative graphics editor for Windows, free for educational and non-commercial use. It's a very powerful product (see note below), yet compact enough to be installed on your jump-drive -- making it a truly portable application for use on-the-go. (You'll find more about portable apps below.) |
|||||||
| - Click for FDU installation instructions | |||||||
Optional PLUG-INS: These extensions to IrfanView add many capabilities to the program. Install these as a single file using the full package (.exe option) from the IrfanView site. Note that if you later upgrade IrfanView, you should always install the newest plug-ins as well. |
|||||||
| MAC users: SORRY! IrfanView only runs on Win-PC. You might try "GIMP" (see link below). There are some other free Mac graphics tools are available, but I have not tested any of these and cannot make a recommendation. Search for Mac graphic editors on VersionTracker.com to find some top rated free tools, such as "Seashore" and "Compositor." Compositor offers both a free version as well as a more robust tool for $35.00. | |||||||
| IrfanView Note: * IrfanView is a fast and simple image viewer and editor that supports all major graphic formats. Here are just some of the ways the IrfanView graphics editing tool can help improve the graphics on your Web site. You can use IrfanView to: Crop images; resize images (using the resampling method); change file formats (including Microsoft clip-art & Word-art to GIFs or JPGs); create transparent GIF images; place text on top of graphics or photos; determine image properties; modify JPG quality & color depth (2 methods to optimize file size); convert JPGs to progressive JPGs; convert GIFs to interlaced GIFs; add image effects (more with plug-ins); enhance colors (brightness, contrast, color balance); sharpen images; rotate images; capture screen images; create graphic images from any font on your computer; and even make 3-D buttons from photos or graphic images. Quite impressive for a free software program! |

| 3. GIMP Graphics Editor - for Windows PC or Mac | |||||||
The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It is sometimes compared to Adobe Photoshop, but it's free. Well, it won't do everything Photoshop will do, but for most, this may be all you need. There are both Windows and Mac versions available. Go to the official GIMP website... or, use the links below for recommended software versions. (Note: GIMP is more powerful than IrfanView, but more difficult to master.) |
|||||||
| Download GIMP for Windows or GIMP for Mac. Note that the user manual is an extra package; make sure that you get it as well. And have a look at the FAQ if you run into any problems. | |||||||
| For Windows users "on-the-go." There is a portable version available at portableApps.com that can be installed on your USB jump drive. Mac users: No portable version available for now. | |||||||

| 4. Netscape Composer Web Editor | |||||||
| IMPORTANT - The new version 8 of Netscape Navigator no longer includes "Composer" for Web site authoring. You can still go to Netscape's archive site to download an earlier version of Navigator (not recommended), or download the Web browser, "Mozilla," which still includes Composer (see link below). The best thing to do is to use Nvu or KompoZer instead. See link below. | |||||||
Netscape Navigator Archived Products Site - Download ver 7.2 for "Composer" |
|||||||
| MAC users: You must have Mac OS X to run the later versions of Netscape, or go to Archive site for earlier v 7.0 | |||||||
| Composer tutorials: Use Composer's built-in “Help” feature, or go to Mozilla Composer online tutorial Here is another good online tutorial (though designed for an earlier version of Composer), a simple Mozilla Composer Guide from the University of Washington. Finally, still one more recommended online tutorial for Netscape Composer version 7.x and some helpful tips from UVic. |
|||||||
| Take a look at my new outline of Web building essentials, it's a great overview for beginners. | |||||||
To download the "Mozilla" browser, which still includes Composer,click here. (Note: Do not download Mozilla "Foxfire," as this does not include Composer.) |

| 5. NVu and KompoZer Web Editors - for Windows PC or Mac | |||||||
| A new standalone Web authoring program is available for free, and is downloadable from the Internet. It has lots of features not available with Composer, including a built-in FTP client to upload your files to the webserver. IMPORTANT: NVu has been superceded by KompoZer (not to be confused with Netscape's Composer). If you are using NVu, stay with it. New users should download from the KompoZer site. Note that you can work with any of these authoring tools interchangeably. Select either NVu or KompoZer at NVu.com, and be sure to select the correct program for your operating system. (Widows users - if you are not advanced, select the latest .exe file for installation, not the .zip file.) Tutorials: There is an online NVu User Guide (or pdf version), or try the one at TheSiteWizard.com. | |||||||
| Want to take NVu or KompoZer with you wherever you go? There are portable application versions available at PortableApps.com. | |||||||

6. Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer Used to view presentations without PowerPoint |
|||||||
Want to view a Powerpoint presentation, or share one you've created... but, you don't have the Microsoft PowerPoint program installed on your computer. You can download a free viewer from Microsoft's Website that will let you run your file without having the full PowerPoint program installed. Note that many of the newer PowerPoint features are not supported by the free player (such as some advanced animations and hyperlinks to connect to the Internet), and you will not be able to edit the file, but you will be able to view and print the full presentation. Go to Microsoft's Powerpoint Viewer 2003 download site for more details, or download the program from this site & read my installation notes. Note that free viewers are also available for MS Word and Excel. |
|||||||

| 7. ArtRage Digital Drawing Program - for Windows PC or Mac | |||||||
| If you've got a knack for freehand drawing, or want to develop "the artist within," try this free drawing program developed by the original group that created the renowned graphic arts painting and illustration program, Corel "Painter." Go to Ambient Design's home page to read about and download ArtRage. Be sure to take a look at the painting gallery and review the online tutorials on the ArtRage site. Note that an HTML manual is included in the download, and can be accessed from within the application. | |||||||
| I highly recommended using a digital drawing tablet when working with any drawing program. With a pressure sensitive pen and the power of modern painting and illustration software, you'll be painting like the 'old masters' in no time at all. For starters, take a look at the Wacom Graphire3 4x5 tablet available at CompUSA or online stores for under one hundred dollars - including lite versions of Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. | |||||||
| Get an introduction to the world of freehand painting by viewing this online tutorial, then take a look at a fascinating digital artists gallery for some inspiration. It's only one of a plethora of artist galleries you will find on the Internet. When you are ready, consider more advanced software tools such as Adobe Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements-3 ) and/or the full Corel Painter (or Painter Essentials) programs. Be sure to ask about lower cost academic software versions when you are ready to purchase these more advanced tools. Most importantly, have fun, and don't forget to share your newfound digital adventures with others. | |||||||

| 8a. CutePDF - Free PDF File Writer | |||||||
| CutePDF is a free utility will allow you to create PDF files from just about any Windows program that provides output to a standard printer. Portable Document Format (PDF) is the de facto standard for the secure and reliable distribution and exchange of electronic documents and forms around the world. The Adobe PDF reader has always been free, but until CutePDF came along - converting files to PDF format required expensive software. Though somewhat limited in features and capabilities this easy to use program will allow you to easily create on-the-fly PDF files from most Windows applications. | |||||||
| 8b. PrimoPDF - another free PDF Writer |
|||||||
| Another popular PDF writer is PrimoPDF, and is available on the Web as a free download. As CutePDF, this utility is for the Window's PC only. Both of these tools have received good reviews, but I have not personally used either one. Please send me comments by email if you have used either, and I'll try to determine which is better. | |||||||

| 9. OpenOffice - Free Office Productivity Suite |
|||||||
| OpenOffice is a free office suite application that produce text documents, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations, author Web pages, and more. OpenOffice is fully compatible with Microsoft Office and can open and edit common Microsoft Office files such as .doc (Word), .xls (Excel) and .ppt (PowerPoint) files. It's free and it runs on PC or Mac. Mac users be warned, though: OpenOffice is still a bit clunky on OS X (it requires a windowing system called X11 to run), so you may be better off using AppleWorks instead. If you want more information before you download this powerful office suite, check out the OpenOffice.org site, or click these links to download a PDF product flyer, view a 'Flash' presentation, or take a look at this online OpenOffice tutorial.Then, go to the OpenOffice download site to install. (I recommend you install the v 1.9+ beta version for advanced features). Note that this is a large file. You may want to order the program on a CD if you have a dial-up connection to the Web. |

| 10. FreeMind - Productivity Mind Mapping Tool |
|||||||
| If you have never used a mind mapping tool, you might want to give this free utility a try. Mind mapping software can be a powerful tool for managing your projects, your goals and even your to-do lists. Mind maps are visually oriented, can capture your "train-of-thought," and enable you to gather, manage and share a large variety of information and resources quickly and easily -- making them an ideal tool for planning or managing your school or personal projects. Go to the FreeMind download site & select your operating system (PC or Mac); be sure to read the background information and see mind map samples on this site. (Note that you must first have Java 1.4 or better installed on your computer for FreeMind to work. Go to the Sun Microsystems Java software site where you can test your system and download the latest version of Java. Windows users, be sure to use the automated install link.) | |||||||
| FDU students: Another mind mapping tool called "Inspiration" is installed on the computers in the Prototype classrooms. It operates very differently than "FreeMind" (it's more like a flow-chart maker) and it's not free. Try them both to see which works better for you. | |||||||
| 11. Portable Applications | |||||||
| Portable applications (apps) are software programs that are designed to run when installed on your USB jump-drive, external drive, or even your iPod This means you can take your software programs with you wherever you go. You'll find lots of free programs available at PortableApps.com, including portable versions of GIMP graphics editor, and NVu and KompoZer web authoring programs. (Note that portable software may not have all the features of the full-install versions, but usually work pretty well.) | |||||||
